What is tithing?
Tithing is the practice of giving a tenth of your income or property as an offering to God.  In the Old Testament the purpose of the giving of a tenth was to meet the material need of the Levite, the stranger, the fatherless (the orphan), and the widow (Deuteronomy 26:12-13).  The tithe was an expression of gratitude to God by His people.  Basic to tithing was the acknowledgement of God’s ownership of everything in the earth (Nelson’s Illustrated Bible Dictionary, Copyright 1986, Thomas Nelson Publishers).  In the New Testament the words tithe and tithing appear eight times (Matthew 23:13; Luke 11:42; 18:12, Hebrews 7:5-6, 8-9).

Tithing is making a voluntary, systematic contribution of financial support to your church.  “Voluntary” means giving out of love and gratitude for all God gives you.  “Systematic” means giving a predetermined portion of your income as you receive it.  Tithing symbolizes and helps express your commitment to Christ and the Church.  A regular plan for giving can help ENRICH YOUR LIFE. Through giving we offer ourselves in service and devotion to God.  We become stronger in faith, more aware of the needs of others, and we experience the joy of sharing with others in Christ.  It also ACCOMPLISHES THE CHURCH MISSION.  Reliable funding allows the church to plan for expenses, administer programs, maintain outreach activities and aid those in need.

What is an offering?
An offering is any money given to a church by a non-member or member that is not part of their tithe.

What does it mean to tithed?
To “tithed” originated in the Old Testament. It is a tenth of our income that we give to God. The Bible records numerous accounts of man “tithing” to God in the Old and New Testament. It is the people of God giving 10% of our income to God via our local church.
